TPM and BitLocker Recovery Key

What is TPM?

TPM (Trusted Platform Module) is a hardware chip that provides secure storage for encryption keys and other security-sensitive data. It is used to protect data on your computer from unauthorized access, even if the computer is stolen or lost.

What is BitLocker?

BitLocker is a full-disk encryption feature that is built into Windows. It uses TPM to protect the encryption key for your hard drive, so that only you can access your data.

How to Recover Your BitLocker Recovery Key

If you lose access to your TPM or your hard drive, you will need to use your BitLocker recovery key to unlock your data. You can create a recovery key when you first set up BitLocker, or you can create one later by following these steps:

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Device security.
  2. Under "Security processor," select "Security processor details."
  3. In the "Details" window, click on the "TPM" tab.
  4. Click on the "Export" button and save the recovery key to a safe location.

If you are unable to recover your BitLocker recovery key, you will not be able to access your data. It is important to keep your recovery key in a safe place, in case you need it.

Additional Information

If you are switching to Windows 7 64-bit, you need to install a specific hotfix before you can use BitLocker with TPM. You can download the hotfix from the Microsoft website.
